Kenai/Soldotna-May 29, 2011

May 29, 2011 – We filled up the truck tonight and discovered we have driven 6,670 miles since we left home a little over a month ago.  We are having a fantastic time.  We went to Church this morning with Jerry and Reva.  We meant some really great people and they gave us some terrific information on what to see, how to fish, and where the bear are.  We drove to Cooper’s Landing about 50 miles away and did not see one bear.  We saw the signs that said, you are in Bear Country, beware of your surroundings.  Seriously!!!  I could have done a little dance, sang a little song, jumped up and down and nothing.  No bear to be seen and tomorrow is another day.  We are taking the Wildlife Cruise from Seward to Fox Island.  Although it doesn’t promise I will see a bear, it does say I will see Wildlife!!!  By the way Chrissy, you were so right with your recommendation of the external hard drive.  You’re so smart!!!!  It has really been a great thing to put our pictures on and make our computer faster.  Thanks for spending your inheritance!!!!, we don't mind that.  It really wasn't that much. You’re the best, and thank you for being so patient and helping us out at midnight. J  You saved me when I thought I lost everything I had written.   We love you a bunch!!! Mom/Marilyn

Kenai/Soldotna-May 28, 2011

May 28, 2011 – Kenai and Soldotna-  We had a very quiet day.  We went to Kenai this morning and stopped at Lowes, Home Depot and Walmart.  We stocked up on the few things that we needed and headed back to camp.  David and Jerry got haircuts and not sure they like them, especially Jerry.  David is ok with his haircut.  Jerry is not so sure. David decided that he would make Alfredo sauce with chicken, shrimp, peas and linguine.  He spent the afternoon making the sauce which was soooo good.  We bought a new Hard Drive to down load our pictures, whatever that means, because Chrissy said.   Thanks Chrissy!!!!   I spent the afternoon relining our cupboards with non slip liner.  I understand this and I’m not sure I understand what the HARD DRIVE is all about.  I do know what it cost. You're such a doll!!! I guess it save the pictures and the computer is faster now. :)   However :)
We had dinner, and it’s beginning to rain.  Jerry and Reva are on their way back to Home Depot to purchase a shelf they want to add to their kitchen.       All is well!            No pictures today.       Just a nice, no nonsense day. /Marilyn

Homer to Kenai/Soldotna AK

May 27, 2011-Leaving Homer. I have mixed feelings about leaving Homer-it’s really a great place.  But it’s time to move on, we only have 47 days left in Alaska and we have so much to see and do.  We’re driving past Anchor Point and once again this is the most westerly point you can drive to!  I’m so excited to see it again!  We are seeing the Cook Inlet and further out is the Bering Sea separating the Pacific and Arctic Oceans.  Mt. Redoubt is on the right and Iliamna on the left.  I read in 2009 Mt. Redoubt was quite active on and off during the spring and summer, shutting down air traffic multiple times due to volcanic activity.  In late September of 2009 the mountain was finally given the all-clear that it was no longer actively perking.
We’re passing Deep Creek and it’s awesome for clamming.  We didn’t go on the right day and the tide wasn’t -4. We had a good time trying anyway.  Not only that if you don’t succeed, you can buy them!!!! We are passing so many boats, campers, and travel trailers.  On Memorial Day Weekend, Ninilchik is referred to as the third biggest city in Alaska, as thousands of Alaskans arrive for the fishing. We’re not staying there, but we did make reservations at our next campground because they say it gets crazy in Soldotna and Kenai also because of all the fishing.
We’re now passing Funny River Road- not so much!!!  Just a name – a small skinny dirt road to a river.  We are on the west coast of the Kenai Peninsula and they say it offers great scenery, fishing, along with bear viewing and bird watching.  REALLY!!!   WHERE ARE THE BEAR????  Bear Watching---It states: You do not have to look hard to find a bear.  Seriously.  We have gone for rides, little jaunts, and I'm sitting and waiting-NOTHING!!!!  Brown Bear, Brown Bear where are you.  It’s says on the sign at the campground:   BEARS OCCASIONALLY WANDER AROUND THE LODGES. Be aware of your surroundings.   I’m up for the challenge.  Show me the bear. /Marilyn

Hey Karen how did you get a boat named after you?
Too nice

Homer, May 26, 2011

May 25, 2011- Our last day in Homer, Alaska.  We took another ride through town to make sure that we saw and did everything we wanted too.  We started to get our trailers ready for our travels tomorrow.  It was a calm and non windy day so David flew his little plane off and on all day.  We went to the Alaska Island & Ocean Visitors center and gathered a few more postcards for the kids.  I really liked the Bald Eagle until I read about them.  They are mean, mean, mean.  It’s still a fascinating place and the spectacular facts of the island and birds were well worth the adventure.  We kicked back and read a few books and facts about Alaska and are ready to venture out tomorrow./Marilyn
