June 10, 2011 – Denali National Park to Fairbanks - We left Riley Creek Campgrounds and headed to the Visitors Center Complex to catch the shuttle bus to the sled dog kennels. They have 33 dogs in Denali National Park. Once you arrive at the kennels you can walk around and pet the dogs. Each has their name on the front of their house and you just call their name and they come over for you to pet them. As the explanation of the role of the sled dogs is about to end, they begin to bark and jump up and down because they know that they‘re going to pull the sled around the trail. It’s so funny because it’s almost as if they’re saying, “Pick me, Pick me! They love minus 40 degree weather and their job! They work all winter taking summers off and back into training in September. As we’re leaving the kennels, there is one more dog sitting on his house with his mouth opened. It’s the only dog that we are allowed to feed since all the others are on special diets. He loves greens and silver. We’re back on the bus and will be leaving Denali and heading for Fairbanks within the hour.
It rained a little here and there but not bad. We stopped to take a few pictures and arrived in Fairbanks around 2:30p.m. We’re staying at the River Edge Campgrounds for the next few nights as we travel around this area. We will visit the pipe line, ride the Sternwheeler and pan for gold. By the way, last night’s sunset was at 12:35a.m and the high tomorrow will be 70 and the low 48 degrees. We have driven over 8000 miles and have been on the road for a little over 6 weeks. /Marilyn
