We left Anchorage this morning around 9:15a.m. along with two of our new camping friends. One of them stayed in Soldotna and the other one ended up at the same campgrounds as us in Homer. We met these campers back at Fort Nelson, and then again at Watson Lake through the snow storm. Along the way, we saw the Kenai River and it is known for their salmon. We saw a few people rafting in a very bright yellow raft you couldn’t miss it. They looked like they were having fun. We saw quite a few mountain goats. They are so easy to pick out now that we know where to look. We arrived in Soldotna only to find out the fish weren’t there yet. They told us that we should have good luck in Homer. We made the decision to move onto Homer and try our luck there. We came into town and saw 11 Bald Eagles. I have never seen so many in one place at any given time. They were just soaring and have a great time. We had only driven a mile from there and right on the edge of town, a Moose 10 feet off the road, so big, and so beautiful. I couldn’t believe we drove two hundred miles and where I thought I should see a Moose, I didn’t. We come into the edge of town and not thinking I would see a Moose, THERE HE WAS!
After we set up camp and had dinner, we decided to go to town. David saw a Bald Eagle on top of a lamp post. We made a U Turn and took several pictures. He just sat there, moved his head so we could get different poses, and we enjoyed every moment, as we have never seen one so close.
We left our Bald Eagle and drove out to Homer Spit. Homer was established on the north shore of Kachemak Bay at Homer Spit in 1895, and named for a local prospector Homer Pennock. Kachemak, the Russian name for bay, means “high cliffs on the water.” Homer calls itself the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World.”
We then started looking for the Time Bandit. If you watch the “Deadliest Catch” you know what we’re talking about--- THERE IT WAS! It was leaving the harbor. We got the best pictures and they waved to us. We still can’t believe we saw them. After taking several shots, we did not see the brothers on the boat, but they could have been on the other side. We had a great time seeing them head out to the open sea. We then drove by the airport and I got a great shot of a rabbit. We are on our way back to the campgrounds now. As we pulled in we saw the Time Bandit going by. It’s been a great day. Hope we can top this one tomorrow./Marilyn
