We left Tok, Alaska at 8:10 a.m. We are taking the Glenn Highway/Tok Cutoff (Alaska Route 1). It is the access route from the Alaska Highway west to Anchorage, about 328 miles. It is a full days travel between Tok and Anchorage. We are seeing some spectacular scenery along the Glenn Highway, with mountain peaks to the north and south.
There is good road conditions most of the way, however, major road reconstruction in others. We mostly traveled at 50mph, watching for heaving and dips. We did not see too many animals today. This is always a big disappointment for me. I saw one snowshoe jack rabbit. That was it. We saw a lot of private airstrips. This is the main transportation for medical emergencies and overall transportation from one place to another.
We saw a few trumpeter swans. They are soooo beautiful. We stopped for lunch in Glennallen and I purchased a few charms for our granddaughters.
It’s slow going right now because of the road damage. We started to notice the change in the trees. It’s starting to get greener. It looks like spring here. The trees are budding and that nice spring green is on the trees.
We have arrived in Palmer, Alaska. Palmer is Alaska’s only community that developed primarily from an agricultural economy. The growing season averages 100-118 days a year, with long hours of sunshine. Some of the largest watermelons, pumpkins, cabbage, and large strawberries, can get be found here.
We didn’t stop and see the Matanuska Glacier. We may stop on the way back, as David can’t walk too far at this point. We could see it from the highway and we called it good!!
We have arrived in Anchorage, Alaska. We are 5665 miles from home and spent about $2100 in fuel. We are at the campgrounds and set up. We will explore here tomorrow and maybe a few more days after that./Marilyn
