Homer to Kenai/Soldotna AK

May 27, 2011-Leaving Homer. I have mixed feelings about leaving Homer-it’s really a great place.  But it’s time to move on, we only have 47 days left in Alaska and we have so much to see and do.  We’re driving past Anchor Point and once again this is the most westerly point you can drive to!  I’m so excited to see it again!  We are seeing the Cook Inlet and further out is the Bering Sea separating the Pacific and Arctic Oceans.  Mt. Redoubt is on the right and Iliamna on the left.  I read in 2009 Mt. Redoubt was quite active on and off during the spring and summer, shutting down air traffic multiple times due to volcanic activity.  In late September of 2009 the mountain was finally given the all-clear that it was no longer actively perking.
We’re passing Deep Creek and it’s awesome for clamming.  We didn’t go on the right day and the tide wasn’t -4. We had a good time trying anyway.  Not only that if you don’t succeed, you can buy them!!!! We are passing so many boats, campers, and travel trailers.  On Memorial Day Weekend, Ninilchik is referred to as the third biggest city in Alaska, as thousands of Alaskans arrive for the fishing. We’re not staying there, but we did make reservations at our next campground because they say it gets crazy in Soldotna and Kenai also because of all the fishing.
We’re now passing Funny River Road- not so much!!!  Just a name – a small skinny dirt road to a river.  We are on the west coast of the Kenai Peninsula and they say it offers great scenery, fishing, along with bear viewing and bird watching.  REALLY!!!   WHERE ARE THE BEAR????  Bear Watching---It states: You do not have to look hard to find a bear.  Seriously.  We have gone for rides, little jaunts, and I'm sitting and waiting-NOTHING!!!!  Brown Bear, Brown Bear where are you.  It’s says on the sign at the campground:   BEARS OCCASIONALLY WANDER AROUND THE LODGES. Be aware of your surroundings.   I’m up for the challenge.  Show me the bear. /Marilyn
